About US
At South Liverpool Citizens Advice Bureau we can give you free, confidential, impartial and independent advice and information on a wide range of subjects.
We can work with you to sort out any debt worries and claim all the benefits you may be entitled to. We can help with housing and employment problems, or deal with queries about consumer or tax issues. We can advise on legal matters, answer questions about immigration, and we have a lot of experience on family and personal matters too.
We are a charity, dependent on a workforce of paid staff and trained volunteers. Our funding comes from Liverpool City Council and other major contributors.
We speak up for change in social policies; from our clients' experiences we can see where services and policies are failing.
We are a member of "Citizens Advice", which provides the extensive information system we use to advise clients and sets standards for advice, training, equal opportunities and accessibility in the bureau.
South Liverpool Citizens Advice Bureau as well as giving general advice manages a variety of projects:
Income Maximisation Project
The Income maximisation Project (IMP) is a city-wide project initiated by the Citizens Advice Bureau, Liverpool Social Services and Mersey Care (NHS) Trust and funded through the Social Services Mental Health Grant.
The service was set up in response to research identifying that people with poor mental health fail, in significant numbers, to obtain their entitlement to benefits. This dedicated and targeted service enhances the income of people experiencing mental distress and therefore can have a positive impact on their quality of life.
The project provides advice, information and representation to clients with severe and/or enduring mental health problems. It focuses its provision on Income Maximisation, with particular reference to Welfare Benefits, Disability Benefits and to debt issues such as mortgage and rent arrears, fuel and water bills and other consumer debt.
There are two caseworkers based in South Liverpool CAB and North liverpool CAB. The project started in December 2000.
Clients can gain access to the service through referral made by:
- Social Workers
- Psychiatrists
- Community Psychiatric Nurses
- Other health care workers
Liverpool Specialist Advice Services
Liverpool Specialist Advice Services (LSAS) is an incorporated registered charity formed by the Liverpool District Coordinating Committee of Liverpool Citizens Advice Bureau in November 1998 to operate a contract with the Legal Aid Board (now Legal Services Commission) to deliver money advice through the nine Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in Liverpool.
LSAS is a unique project and is a flagship of the Community Legal Services, the government's organisation which endeavours to develop a working partnership between the Legal Services Commission (LSC), local authorities and other agencies in order to provide legal help and assistance to the community.
LSAS currently has one of the largest LSC NFP contracts in the country and holds the SQM in Debt, Welfare Benefits and Housing, employing thirty five caseworkers in all major Citizens Advice Bureau of the city.
Financial Inclusion
The Financial Inclusion Fund (FIF) was a government initiative to tackle financial exclusion. It targeted three priority areas: access to free face-to-face money advice; access to banking services; and access to affordable credit.
The project led by GMMAP is funded to increase availability of face-to-face debt advice to financially excluded clients. The project have been running since 2006, helping nationwide 70,000 clients per year. The Financial Inclusion Fund has now ended but has been replaced from 2011 with the Face to Face Debt Advice Programme.
