volunteer week

Volunteers at Citizens Advice South Liverpool donated £178,322 worth of their time in the last year up to March 2016.

Caryn Matthews, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice South Liverpool, is using Volunteers Week (1 - 12 June 2016) to thank the 62 volunteers who gave their time at the local charity over the last 12 months.

Citizens Advice South Liverpool volunteers support people face-to-face and over the phone. Over the last 12 months they helped local people with nearly 8,000 issues by:

Dealing with debt, designing payment plans and negotiating with lender

Improving people’s financial skills, for example by finding ways to cut fuel bills

Standing up for people’s rights at work if they believe they have been bullied or unfairly dismissed

Helping people claim their entitlements like sick pay and maternity pay

Volunteers also give their time in areas like IT, form filling, campaigning and administration.

Chief Executive Officer Caryn Matthews is encouraging local people in South Liverpool to get in touch about volunteering opportunities.

Caryn Matthews said: "“Citizens Advice volunteers change lives. It is thanks to the generosity of our volunteers that Citizens Advice South Liverpool is able to help people take control of their finances, claim entitlements like sick pay and protect their rights at work.

“There are many opportunities to volunteer at Citizens Advice and new volunteers are always welcome.”

Penny is our longest serving volunteer and has been with us for 22 years. Penny started when her children were young and couldn’t commit to full time work so thought volunteering at her local bureau would be ideal. Penny has seen a lot of changes over the years but loves the variety and diversity of the people she meets.

“It is really satisfying being able to help people solve their problems and see that a weight has been lifted off their mind.  Being a volunteer at Citizens Advice has also given me an opportunity to learn valuable skills and work with great people.“I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about volunteering at Citizens Advice South Liverpool.”

ahmadAhmad and Sadegh have both recently completed their training and are now advising clients.  They joined as part of our Diversity in Delivery Project which aims to increase access to Citizens Advice services for the BME residents of Princes Park ward.

Twenty one thousand volunteers gave up their time across the Citizens Advice network last year.  The national charity estimates its volunteers donate over £100 million worth of time each year across England and Wales. By working out how much it would cost for paid employees to do their work Citizens Advice is able to estimate the value of hours donated by volunteers.

We recruit and train volunteer receptionist/information assistants, advisers, telephone assessors, administrators and social policy workers.
